‘The Mick’ Gets Additional Episode Order; Kaitlin Olson Teases What’s Next
“The Mick” has scored an almost full Season 2 order at Fox.
As first reported by TVLine, the network commissioned seven additional episodes for the series, bringing the Season 2 total to 20, three more episodes than it produced in Season 1.
“The Mick” launched last season as a midseason series with a 13-episode order. But after becoming the network’s top comedy launch since New Girl in 2011, the first season was extended by four episodes to a total of 17. According to Variety, Season 1 averaged a 1.1 rating and 2.95 million viewers.
Emphasizing its confidence in the sitcom, Fox moved “The Mick” from its 8:30 p.m. timeslot on Tuesdays to 9 p.m. as part of a one-hour comedy block alongside “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” The show’s Season 2 premiere last September drew 2.8 million viewers and 0.9 demo rating, besting its numbers for the Season 1 finale.
Created by brother’s Dave and John Chernin, “The Mick” follows the story of Mickey (Kaitlin Olson), an unapologetic degenerate who suddenly finds herself stuck raising her spoiled niece Sabrina (Sofia Black-D’Elia) and nephews Chip (Thomas Barbusca) and Ben (Jack Stanton) in affluent Greenwich, Conn. The series also stars Carla Jimenez as Alba and Scott MacArthur as Jimmy.
In a recent interview with Fox 7 Austin, MacArthur said that the series will further explore Mickey and Jimmy’s relationship later in the season. “In an episode coming up, we go back to Warwick, R.I., where these two characters are from,” MacArthur said. “And we kind of get their origin story, which is comedically tragic.”
Olson said that Mickey and Jimmy’s relationship was so mysterious that the writers decided to give them a backstory this season. “I always was wondering what’s happening [and] what’s going on [between Mickey and Jimmy],” Olson said. “At some point last season, I was like, ‘Guys, we have to address this because I don’t even know how to act around this character. I don’t even know how I feel about him.’ So that was sort of the impetus for doing some episodes where we dive in and figure out who they are to each other. Those are really fun.”
“The Mick” Season 2 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.
