Microsoft announced a call for Windows 10 version 1809 users to avoid installing the Windows October 15 cumulative update. The software giant further warned the users that the latest cumulative update may pose a serious risk to Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) dependent companies.

Microsoft made an alert warning yesterday to all Windows 10 version 1809 users as well as owners of devices running on Windows Server 2019 to avoid updating their devices to update KB4520062, also known as the October 15 update. The company specified that installing the said update could bring a problem to companies relying upon Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) for their devices’ protection, threat intelligence, monitoring endpoint devices as well as antivirus.

As its name says, the October 15 cumulative update was released on October 15. The update KB4520062 was intended for Windows 10 version 1809 and Windows Server 2019. It is the second update that followed the October Patch Tuesday update.

How The October 15 Cumulative Update Affects Windows 10 Devices

A part of the alert issued by Microsoft is a statement telling how destructive the October 15 cumulative update can be. As Microsoft reported, update KB4520062 might completely stop the Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) from running or might affect its initial functions.

It may also cause a failure in sending the reporting data in Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection. Windows 10 users who installed the update may also receive the 0xc0000409 error in Event Viewer on MsSense.exe.

How To Avoid The Risk

As of the moment, the safest way for Windows 10 users to avoid the problem is to refrain from installing the said Windows 10 launch. As their official statement said, devices in affected areas must avoid installing KB4520062 and instead wait for the next cumulative update release. Since the October 15 cumulative update is an optional feature, avoiding the risk comes easy.

Microsoft also answered with the assurance that they are working on a solution to the problem. The software giant gave its followers the mid-year deadline to have the Mid-release out. It is, however, unclear if the update will be out before or after the November Patch Tuesday update that will be on November 12.
