  • The DA bares both parties did not want to go to court for the matter
  • Tyson's legal team is happy with how the DA handled the case

Mike Tyson may have just heard some positive news about his infamous plane punching incident.

Last month, Tyson got involved in an airplane attack where he repeatedly punched a fellow passenger, who was later identified as Melvin Townsend .

A short video clip of the incident went viral online and reports of the legendary boxer possibly facing multiple charges followed suit.

After reviewing the case, the San Mateo County District Attorney stated Monday, May 9, that Tyson will not face criminal charges from the said incident, TMZ Sports reported.

The District Attorney added that due to "the conduct of the victim leading up to the incident, the interaction between Mr. Tyson and the victim, as well as the requests of both the victim and Mr. Tyson," no charges will be filed against the 55-year-old retired professional boxer.

Stephen Wagstaffe, the San Mateo County District Attorney, also told TMZ that the case did not progress as “ultimately neither Tyson nor the man [Townsend] wanted to go to court over it all.”

The report even noted that Wagstaffe believes "there were more serious cases his office should be prosecuting regardless.”

Tyson’s legal team, on the other hand, thanked the San Mateo justice system for handling the case with the utmost fairness and professionalism.

"We thank San Mateo District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe, the San Mateo County Sheriff, and all law enforcement agencies involved in this investigation for their careful, diligent, and professional work," Tyson's team of attorneys, David Z. Chesnoff, Richard A. Schonfeld and Martin A. Sabelli told TMZ.

Townsend, the man on the other side in the case, was no stranger to facing charges as well.

He was reportedly listed as having “habitual felony offender status for his regular offenses” and has been convicted of multiple crimes ranging from “fraud by identity theft to trafficking stolen property.”

For context, previous reports said that Townsend allegedly threw a water bottle at Tyson while continuously harassing “Iron Mike.”

Tyson’s friend and former UFC champion Henry Cejudo, meanwhile, speculated that Townsend must have really ticked “The Baddest Man on the Planet” off as he witnessed how happy he was before boarding the plane.

“I have never seen Mike so so happy,” Cejudo stated. “And so we went to Nashville’s that night and then we ended up jumping in the same car as we went to the airport. This is an hour before the incident, but I have never seen Uncle Mike in such good spirits man. So this dude must have really crossed the line because Mike hugged all of us and he gave us all a kiss before he took off to Miami.”
