Miley Cyrus Opens Up About Sexist Remarks She Endured Over MTV VMAs Performance

Miley Cyrus has accused the production team of the MTV Video Music Awards of making sexist remarks during a backstage encounter while filming this year’s performance.

While appearing in “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast on Spotify, the 27-year-old musician, who performed an amazing rendition of her song “Midnight Sky” at this year’s event, opened up about the sexist comments she had to hear from the production team after she requested some changes before her performance.

The “Don’t Call Me Angel” hitmaker recalled the moment when she said that she wanted some specific lights to be “turned off.” Cyrus noted she wanted no “beauty light” on her as she wants people to see her the way she really is. She had a quarrel with the team and told them to just “turn the [explicit] lights off.”

“I wanted the lights to be turned off and then the lighting of the room to just be lighting me. So no key light, no beauty light,” she added. “Beauty light is always used on women. And I said turn the [explicit]lights off. You would never tell Travis Scott or Adam Levine that he couldn’t turn the beauty light off. I want this red lighting,” NME quoted Cyrus, as saying.

The production team responded by saying “ok” and did the same thing that they would do for the male performers.

The “Wrecking Ball” hitmaker then went on to reveal how her bracelet was repeatedly getting caught in her dress and that’s when the MTV producer made a sexist remark on her.

“And then something that I was doing ― something that I can’t say ― for the VMAs, my bracelets kept getting caught in all this [explicit] and they said, ‘You know you wanted to be treated like a guy and lit like a guy? We wouldn’t be dealing with this if a guy was doing it,’” Cyrus revealed during the interview.

However, the artist clapped back at the producer by saying that a guy performer won’t sell the show as she would.

“And I said, ‘Well, a guy wouldn’t be doing this because a guy doesn’t sell your show with sex the way that I’m going to,’” Cyrus said during the podcast.

When Rogan asked how she deals with comments like that, the acclaimed musician said she tries to be “firm and kind” while executing what she wants. She also noted that no one would say the same things to Kanye West if he wanted some different kinds of lighting.

“I am firm about what I want, but in a way that, you know, you might expect someone might say, ‘Man, she was a diva, she was a [explicit].’ But it’s again, it’s like ― OK, have The Weeknd come in here and say the same thing,” the singer noted during the interview.

Cyrus won two trophies at this year's virtual event, including Best Editing for the song "Mother's Daughter."
