MLB Rumors: Freddie Freeman, Atlanta Braves Could Split After Lockout
When the MLB lockout eventually comes to an end, one of the best players in baseball could part ways with the only franchise he’s ever known. The latest rumors suggest that there’s a good chance Freddie Freeman will leave the Atlanta Braves in free agency.
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, there’s a “growing belief” within MLB that Freeman will sign with a new team. Unsigned for the 2022 season, Freeman was not among the All-Stars who were part of the league’s record-setting spending spree in early December.
Freeman reportedly turned down a five-year, $135 million offer from the Braves. If another team offers the first baseman a six-year contract, the reigning World Series champions might quickly move to find his replacement.
A five-time All-Star since making his debut with the Braves in 2010, Freeman was Atlanta’s best player during last season’s championship run. After hitting .300/.393/.503 with 31 home runs during the 2021 regular season, Freeman was even better in the playoffs. Freeman had a 1.045 OPS with five homers and 11 RBI in 16 postseason games.
Freeman won the 2020 NL MVP award in the truncated 60-game season. Since 2013, Freeman has finished in the top 10 in MVP voting six times. Freeman has hit .295 or better with an OPS north of .890 in six straight seasons.
Given his consistent productivity, Freeman won’t have any shortage of suitors in free agency. The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees reportedly have interest in Freeman. The Boston Red Sox are viewed as a possible landing spot for the 32-year-old if he doesn’t return to Atlanta.
The Yankees have not made a significant addition in free agency. If New York doesn’t re-sign Anthony Rizzo, Freeman could fit perfectly in the middle of New York’s lineup.
The Dodgers could potentially afford to give Freeman a lucrative deal after losing Max Scherzer and Corey Seager in free agency. Atlanta beat Los Angeles in six games in last year’s NLCS.
Los Angeles has the best odds to win the 2022 World Series. Atlanta is not among the betting favorites for this year’s title.
