Moammar Gadhafi was killed by Libyans he once scorned as rats, succumbing to wounds, some seemingly inflicted after his capture by fighters who overran his last redoubt on Thursday in his hometown of Sirte.

The Libyan interim government fighters captured Sirte and extinguished the last signs of resistance by loyalists.

Libyan Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril, citing a forensic report, said Gadhafi's son Mo'tassim died of a wound to the head. He also suffered a break in the skull and five bullets in the back and one in the neck.

It has also been reported that Gadhafi had asked the men who captured him for mercy. These reports came following weeks of fierce fighting in the city.

Gruesome pictures of the bloodied face of Gadhafi and his son were telecast by TV channels all over the world.
