A woman in India dangled her young child from the 10th floor of a high-rise building so that the boy could retrieve the clothes that fell on the downstairs balcony. A terrifying video of the incident was shared on social media, sparking heated online discussions about child safety.

The incident reportedly happened in an apartment in Faridabad, a city in the northern Indian state of Haryana last week. The video of the incident, which appears to be shot from a building opposite to building the apartment, was shared on Twitter and soon went viral, NDTV reported.

The video surfaced online with a caption: "Appalled to see this video of a mother from #Faridabad! Heights of carelessness, insensitivity & irresponsibility. She has no right to risk her kid's life." The post has fetched more than 14 K views since it was shared on Feb.11.

The footage shows a woman dangling a young boy using a long cloth from her balcony to the floor below. The young boy is seen grabbing the other end of the cloth while his mother, along with an elderly woman who appears to be his grandmother, pulls him back to their balcony. The video also shows a few young children who appear to be the child's siblings watching the action.

Meanwhile, it is unclear from the video if the boy suffered any injuries during the stunt.

According to reports, the incident happened on Feb. 6 and the unidentified mother was trying to get back a few pieces of clothing that flew to the downstairs balcony as the 9th-floor apartment was locked.

A resident of the building said the woman did not seek anyone's help and instead, dangled the child with a saree. Meanwhile, the management of the building has issued a notice asking for an explanation from the woman, the resident added.

Many viewers on Twitter were appalled by the incident and slammed the woman for putting her son in a situation that could have harmed his life.

"Heights of carelessness and shameful deed to put her son's life at risk for few used clothes...She should be PUNISHED for such an act. It is not acceptable," a viewer said.

Some others opined that the incident needs to be investigated and a case should be registered against the mother. "The authorities should book the woman for criminal negligence as this act is against the right to life of a minor. He could have died here," another Twitter user said.
