An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder in Memphis, Tennessee, after his own mother turned him in, police say.

The suspect, identified as Jadon Glasper, faces second-degree murder charges in the fatal shooting of Michael Cross-Clay. The shooting happened in an apartment on Comanche Court in Parkway Village, Memphis, Wednesday, Fox 13 Memphis reported.

Glasper's mother, who was not named, called police in Horn Lake, Mississippi — where she currently lives — and told them her son had shot someone in Memphis, according to a court affidavit obtained by WREG.

Horn Lake police contacted Memphis officers, who went to the apartment and found Cross-Clay's body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities found and arrested Glasper at his mother's Horn Lake home, the affidavit said.

Memphis police said Glasper confessed to the crime after he was arrested.

Glasper told investigators that Cross-Clay allegedly came into his room yelling about a gun. The 18-year-old claimed he grabbed the gun and fired it toward the direction of Cross-Clay because he was scared, police said.

However, the suspect admitted that he knew the victim was not armed at the time, police said.

Glasper is being held on a $100,000 bond and is set to appear in court next week, according to WREG.

Senior pastor Bill Adkins of Greater Imani Church praised Glasper's mother for her actions.

“Now that mother, she went a long way,” Adkins said of Glasper's mom. “I admire what she did, but that would be tough for most mothers to do.”

“If we’re silent and don’t say anything about the crimes we know happened, that we witnessed we’re contributing to the crime. We’re almost an accessory to it,” the pastor added. “It’s not snitching. It’s saving lives. It’s protecting our community. It’s making our community safer to live in.”

Two days after Cross-Clay was fatally shot, an unnamed man was injured in another shooting in the Whitehaven neighborhood of Memphis, WREG reported.

The victim was brought to Regional One Health in critical condition. A man and a woman, both of whom were not identified in the report, have been detained in connection with the Whitehaven shooting.

The motive behind the shooting and whether the man and woman are facing any charges in the incident have yet to be announced by police.
