  • A relative of Akers called 911 on seeing blood in the house
  • Doctors said the timely intervention of officers saved the child's life
  • The accused will have another court appearance next week

A 28-year-old Maryland woman, who cut her three-year-old daughter's neck with scissors, has been ordered by a court to meet with a psychiatrist for a mental health evaluation.

The order was issued Monday by the Rockville District Court where Anne Catherine Akers had a bond review, reports Yahoo News.

Montgomery County Department of Police said in a statement that they got a call around 10:50 a.m. Saturday saying the caller, who's a relative of the accused, saw blood on the floor of Aker's house upon arrival.

The relative immediately left the residence to call 911. The Fourth District officers who responded to the home spotted blood and a pair of scissors on the floor.

"Officers located Akers on a bedroom floor suffering from a laceration to her neck; they began to assess her injuries. Officers removed a blanket Akers was holding and observed her three-year-old daughter with a life-threatening laceration to her neck," the statement read.

Officers immediately began life-saving measures on the child who was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Fire and Rescue personnel, who arrived at the scene, transported Akers to a local hospital with serious injuries, said the statement.

It added that the physicians who treated Akers’ daughter at the hospital said the officers' immediate life-saving actions saved the three-year-old child from death.

Meanwhile, Akers has been charged with one count of attempted second-degree murder, one count of first-degree assault, and one count of first-degree child abuse. She is currently being held without bond at the Central Processing Unit and is scheduled to appear before the court next Monday.

In a similar incident, an Atlanta woman was arrested a week ago for accidentally smothering her newborn to death while under the influence of methamphetamine.

The officers arrived at the Georgia home after receiving a call about an unresponsive baby which was declared dead at the scene. Further investigation revealed the baby’s mother, Audra Wood, had accidentally smothered him to death.

It came to light that Wood was under the influence of methamphetamine when the incident took place. A toxicology report further revealed meth was found in the newborn’s body. Following this, a warrant was issued for the woman’s arrest.
