Mom Who Accidentally Smothered Newborn To Death Under Meth Influence Charged With Murder
An Atlanta woman has been arrested and charged with murder for accidentally smothering her newborn to death while under the influence of methamphetamine.
The police and paramedics arrived at a home in Georgia on Feb. 28, 2020, after receiving a report of an unconscious baby. The officers pronounced the 1-month-old baby dead at the scene. Investigation revealed the baby’s mother, identified as Audra Wood, had accidentally smothered him to death, Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Further investigation revealed she was under the influence of methamphetamine when the incident took place. A toxicology report further revealed meth was found in the newborn’s body. Following this, a warrant was issued for the woman’s arrest.
"Accused was under the influence of methamphetamine, based upon the illicit substance being present within her blood. Your affiant further discovered based upon the results of said victim’s autopsy report, the infant juvenile male victim had also been under the influence of methamphetamine, as it too was located within his blood," an officer wrote in the warrant, Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
The woman was taken into custody from her home Tuesday and was charged with murder in connection with the baby’s death.
Following the baby’s death in February 2020, the woman started a GoFundMe page, in which she revealed the incident took place at her family home in Georgia.
"On Jan, 20, 2020, I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, Quincey Jay Wood. Just over a month later I took my little family of three (Blake, Quincy, and myself) to visit family in Georgia. The first night there we went to bed but when we woke up in the morning Quincy wasn’t breathing so I called 911. The paramedics came but unfortunately, it was too late and the imaginable became a reality… my baby boy Quincey had passed away and I was crushed," she wrote.
She also wrote her older son was taken into protective custody following the infant’s death.
"All I want to do is get my son Blake back, get back home, and give my baby Quincey a final resting place. I am asking for help to do this because everything costs money and everything adds up quickly," she wrote.
The accused is currently being held in the Cobb jail and details regarding her bail plea were not known.
