  • Capcom is the developer and publisher of the hit series "Monster Hunter"
  • The gaming studio suffered a major data breach in 2020
  • It was rumored that Sony paid Capcom for delaying the PC version of "Monster Hunter World"

A rumor surfaced recently claiming that Sony Interactive Entertainment paid Capcom to delay the release of "Monster Hunter: World" on PC. It said the Japanese gaming giant was the reason behind the game's lack of cross-saves and cross-play features.

Twitter user AsteriskAmpersand, on Monday, claimed that Sony was responsible for the delayed release of the PC version of "Monster Hunter: World," citing some leaked documents. The company reportedly did the same for "Monster Hunter: Iceborne." The "MH" researcher also claimed that "crossplay and cross-saves were not enabled" because of Sony.

The researcher said these details were revealed in the leaked files "Global Meeting_minutes_20190315." Apparently, it is a part of a major data leak Capcom experienced last year. However, a new report by DSOGaming debunked the claims against Sony. The site noted that the document the "MH" researcher was referring to did not say anything like that.

The files reportedly talked about marketing rights and did not mention anything "about cross-play or cross-saves." Sony did not pay Capcom anything to delay the announcement and release of the "Monster Hunter: World" PC version, the report said. The "MH" researcher, later tweeted that the information was misinterpreted.

"On more careful reading I misunderstood. SIE deal was limited marketing spenditure to a cap of 30% for IB PC (it does imply there was an outright marketing ban on MHW)," the researcher tweeted, adding that "the reference to the SIE deal scope is unknown if strictly Mktng, which I'm looking into."

"Monster Hunter: World" is the fifth action RPG title installment of the hit "Monster Hunter" series developed and published by Capcom. The game was officially released worldwide on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in January 2018. The "Monter Hunter: World" PC version was released in August 2018. The latest entry in the series is "Monster Hunter: Rise," which was launched recently on the hybrid gaming console, Nintendo Switch.
