Morrissey Is MIA: Singer's Location And Status Unknown After Being Reported Hospitalized

British rock star Morrissey was reported hospitalized in Michigan on Friday night, but it now appears nobody is quite sure of the whereabouts of the former frontman of The Smiths.

Morrissey was originally reported hospitalized -- at the Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak -- for a bladder infection, but the singer’s health status and whereabouts seem uncertain at this time.

MLive made several attempts to contact Morrissey’s publicist Laura Papapietro on Saturday and Sunday, but could not get in touch with her.

"I don't know for a fact that's he's OK or not OK," Susan Blond, who owns the public-relations firm that has Morrissey as a client, told Mlive Detroit on Sunday afternoon. "I do know that he's one of the most important artists of our time. We would expect that if anyone thought that things were not going well [with his health] that they would certainly be there and let people know that wanted to know."

MLive noted that the only person to confirm Morrissey’s hospitalization was Papapietro, who sent an email about the singer’s status on Friday. The news site checked with Beaumont Hospital, but could not find anyone there under Morrissey’s real name, Steven Patrick Morrissey.

"I looked him up, and there was no name on our list," a hospital representative told MLive on Saturday.

It is possible that Morrissey checked into the hospital under an alias, as celebrities are wont to do.

The singer, who has been in the public eye since fronting The Smiths in the 1980s, canceled a concert in Flint, Mich., on Jan. 24 and postponed eight other shows around the country between Jan. 25 and Feb. 6, according to his website. At this point, the site indicates his current tour is scheduled to resume on Feb. 9 in Las Vegas.

Morrissey embarked on a successful solo career following the breakup of The Smiths in 1987, when the alternative-rock group disbanded because of a feud between the singer and the guitarist Johnny Marr. Before then, though, they released such landmark albums as “Meat Is Murder” and “The Queen Is Dead.”
