'Mortal Kombat' Film Screenwriter Confirms Film Will Be Rated R, Feature Fatalities On Twitter

The screenwriter for the newest big screen adaptation of “Mortal Kombat” has confirmed that the movie will indeed be rated R.

Greg Russo, who serves as screenwriter for the new “Mortal Kombat” movie, confirmed the rating on his twitter on Friday morning.

“Since it's already been stated by other members of the team, I'm gonna put this one to bed,” Russo wrote in the tweet. He then confirmed that “Mortal Kombat” will indeed have an R-rating when it hits theaters in 2021 “for the first time ever.” What Russo is referencing are the original 1992 theatrical film and its sequel, “Annihilation,” both of which were rated PG-13.

He also confirmed that the film will take full advantage of the R-rating by incorporating the fatalities the game series is famous for. However, he did say fans will have to wait to see which characters will get to “finish” their opponents in grisly fashion.

This is the latest in series of announcements that shows how the James Wan produced reboot is coming together.

The first official casting was announced on Tuesday when Joe Taslim was revealed to be playing Sub-Zero. For anyone unfamiliar, Taslim is most famous for his work in the Indonesian martial arts-action film, “The Raid: Redemption,” and his appearance in “Fast & Furious 6.”

A character list was also reportedly leaked, though it was quickly shot down by Russo that the list was a much older list from early scripts.
