A 28-year-old woman in India was arrested for allegedly decapitating her 35-day-old baby, who was born prematurely at eight months.

The accused is said to have dumped the infant's severed head in a forest, while she hid the torso in a pot inside the washroom. The horrific incident took place in the state of West Bengal last week, the Press Trust of India reported.

The police told local media Saturday the woman was arrested from her father's house in a village under Haringhata police station. The unidentified accused reportedly used a sharp weapon to decapitate the girl, and then dumped the severed head in a forested area near the house and kept torso in a pot inside the washroom.

On the day of the incident, the accused's mother went to her daughter's room to check on the child, but could not find her there. The woman found her daughter in the room with her hands soaked in blood, Jagran reported [Google Translate showed], following which she informed the police about the incident.

The unidentified mother of the accused claimed her daughter was suffering from some neurological disease. She had been married to a farmer and the couple has an 11-year-old boy.

The woman had been staying with her father after she returned from a hospital in the state's capital city of Kolkata two days ago. Local members of the village told the police the woman had been admitted to a nursing home in Kolkata where she delivered the girl prematurely due to complications in her pregnancy. The woman was later transferred to a state-run facility where the mother and the child received treatment for a month. The duo were discharged last week Wednesday.

The police said they have launched an investigation and are looking into the case from all angles. The motive behind the killing is yet to be confirmed.

Last week in the state of Andhra Pradesh, the body of a 14-day-old baby girl was found dumped in a water sump of a private hospital.
