Mother Allegedly Shoots 5-Year-Old Son While Putting Gun In Purse

A 5-year-old boy was allegedly shot by his "intoxicated" mother in Columbus, Ohio, Friday after she waved a gun around, police said.

The boy, whose identity was not disclosed, was brought to Nationwide Children’s Hospital after his mother, Trenise Turner, shot him through both knees, the Columbus Division of Police said in a release. The child was in "stable condition" as of Saturday and is set to undergo corrective surgery.

Police said they were alerted to the shooting by the hospital after the boy was brought in by other family members.

According to investigators, Turner was "intoxicated" on a couch at a residence with her son lying next to her. She was allegedly "pointing her handgun at several adults in the home and making threats," police said.

The woman was putting the gun back into her purse when she allegedly "fired a shot, striking her son in the legs," the release stated.

Turner was arrested and charged with felony endangering of children as well as a misdemeanor, domestic violence by assault.

Turner is currently being held at Franklin County Jail. She is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, WSYX reported.

The incident comes just days after another 5-year-old boy in Ohio died after shooting himself in the head.

Maple Heights police responded to a report of a child being shot at a residence in Maple Heights Boulevard at around 11:49 p.m. Tuesday. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, Cleveland 19 News reported.

A neighbor alleged that the child may have picked up a gun that was left out by a man in the residence but was not clear on which man it was. The investigation is currently ongoing.
