A woman killed herself after poisoning her two young sons in Hyderabad, the capital city of southern India's Telangana state, on Tuesday.

Police said 28-year-old Anjali had lodged a domestic violence complaint against her husband, 35-year-old Prasad, earlier this year. The couple was supposed to attend a counseling session Tuesday, however, Anjali did not turn up. She instead stayed back at home, poisoned her children, eight-year-old Amruth and 10-year-old Anirudh, before consuming it herself.

"There was a case booked against Prasad at Begumpet women police station. The duo was to attend the counseling today. When Anjali did not turn up, officials called her to check whether she was coming or not. She said she cannot come as she was in school, but she never went to school. Towards late in the afternoon, she made her two children drink poison and later consumed it herself," police said.

Neighbors rushed to the scene after Anirudh ran to them for help and took the children to the hospital.

“The elder boy vomited immediately and alerted the house owner, who rushed the children to a hospital. The younger kid’s condition is critical and he was sent to Gandhi Hospital. Their mother Anjali died at Gandhi Hospital,” police said.

Anjali reportedly left a suicide note stating that she took the drastic step following harassment by her husband.

"Anjali's husband Prasad is a drunkard. He never used to take care of the children and the expenses at home. The whole of burden was on the shoulders of Anjali, he used to harass her in different ways to extort money from her,” police said.

Prasad, who was on the run, was charged with abetment to suicide. Police said the investigation was underway and the search was on to nab Prasad. Meanwhile, Anjali’s body was sent for autopsy while Anirudh, who was discharged from hospital, was with his maternal grandparents.
