A Florida mother was arrested for allegedly pouring boiling hot water on one of her children.

Gabrielle Jones, 35, told cops that she was having trouble with her daughter before scalding her with the hot water. Officers arrived at her Clewiston home on Jan. 23 and spoke about the incident with the child, who is in middle school, according to ABC7 Southwest Florida.

The girl said she was in the kitchen doing her little sister’s hair and was using hot water to tighten her curls. When she bent over in her chair to pick up a dropped toy, some of the hot water accidentally spilled on the younger sister’s back, police said. The mother rushed into the kitchen upon hearing the child’s screams and began yelling at the older child.

The mother allegedly told the girl she needed to know how it feels. Jones then boiled some water on the stove, went to her daughter’s room and allegedly threw the scalding hot water on her.

“The child had to turn her face away, so the boiling hot water wouldn’t get on her face. It hit her head and on the side of her shoulder is where the burns were the worst,” said Detective Williams, who worked on the case for the Clewiston Police Department.

Police said the child sustained blisters on her right arm. The girl also told officials that she no longer felt safe around her mother after the incident.

Officials from CPD said Jones admitted to throwing the hot water and then getting into a physical fight where the girl’s brother had to pull the mother off her. Jones is also accused of not providing her child with the required medical attention after the incident.

“They look like second-degree burns. It was pretty decent burns on there. The child, thank God, didn’t get it on her face or anything so that was a good thing. She just had it on her arm,” Williams said, as quoted by WINK.

Jones also told cops that she was trying to teach her daughter a “lesson.” Officials said she went with the matter to the police right after burning her daughter.

“She wanted the officers to talk to her child. I’m not 100% sure why she came here first. She just wanted us to talk to the child because the child was acting up,” Williams said, according to the outlet.

Following their conversation with Jones, the police arrived at her house and inspected the situation before arresting the mother.

Jones is facing charges of child neglect with great bodily harm and aggravated child abuse. She was released on bond but is not allowed to contact her kids. Officials said the children are now in their grandmother’s care.
