In the past several days, the world of smartphones was taken by a storm when Motorola revealed their first-ever smartphone with a foldable display: the new Motorola RAZR. Inspired by the classic flip phones that the company was known for in the past decades, the new RAZRsmartphone also folds--only that along with it, the display folds as well.

In a recent interview with Phone Arena, Ruben Castano, the Vice President of Design at Motorola talked about Motorola’s process when it comes to designing a new phone, what things are considered, as well as his expectations for the future of smartphone design.

In the interview, Castano revealed that even the seemingly small details such as the choosing of the colors a smartphone will be released on is backed by a systematic process of research. This includes, naturally, a study in the demands and the preferences of users when it comes to the colors of their smartphones. They also carefully consider how each color choice would look alongside the others when they are showcased together side-by-side.

Castano also talked about the future and the evolution of smartphone designing, where it has gone since the past years and where it thinks it will be headed in the coming years.

“As smartphone technology evolves, so does design,” he said in the interview. “Ultimately, the goal is to utilize design and technology to create a worry-free smartphone experience for consumers, where back-end components are hidden and the user can simply enjoy.”

He also had his point-of-view on whether it is worth it to sacrifice the durability of the device and prioritize the design of it instead.

“There are ways to design and develop smartphones that look good without sacrificing durability and high-quality construction,” he added. “A crucial piece to this is for designers to understand how the device is made from the inside out. By seeing how components are assembled and products are made, designers can understand what is possible of the device from both a durability and a design perspective.”

Earlier this week, Samsung also did the same by sharing the full story of how its first-ever foldable display smartphone came to be, the Samsung Galaxy Fold.
