Movie Sequels 2018: 22 Film Follow-Ups Being Released In New Year
If a movie is successful, a sequel is usually not far off, and 2018 has plenty of them. From action movies like “Maze Runner” to beloved classics like “Mary Poppins,” it seems there will be sequels for everyone to watch in the new year.
“Insidious: The Last Key” (Jan. 5) The fourth installment of the “Insidious” franchise hits the big screen in 2018. Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) investigates disturbances happening in a house she grew up in.
“Maze Runner: The Death Cure” (Jan. 26) Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and the Gladers must break into the Last City to get the answers they’ve been looking for. This will be the last sequel in the franchise.
“Fifty Shades Freed” (Feb. 9) Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) and Christian (Jamie Dornan) head down the aisle, but there are always new threats for the BDSM-loving couple to face together.
“Pacific Rim: Uprising” (March 23) The Jaeger program is one of the most powerful defense forces in the world, and now they have to prevent humanity’s extinction. John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, and Adria Arjona star.
“Sherlock Gnomes” (March 23) A sequel to 2011’s “Gnomeo and Juliet,” this movie shows Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet (Emily Blunt) recruiting a detective (Johnny Depp) and his sidekick (Chiwetel Ejiofor) to investigate the disappearance of some gnomes.
“The New Mutants” (April 13) This X-Men film is taking the franchise into much creepier territory. Five teenage mutants are held hostage in a secret facility and they have to find a way to save themselves. The teen mutants include Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams), Cannonball (Charlie Heaton), Sunspot (Henry Zaga) and Mirage (Blu Hunt).
“Super Troopers 2” (April 20) The state troopers are setting up a new highway patrol station on the border. Surely, the goofball cops will figure out a way to have fun while the U.S. and Canada dispute the exact location of the border.
“Avengers: Infinity War” (May 4) Thanos (Josh Brolin) has been after the Infinity Stones for nearly a decade, but this is the first movie where he’ll play a major role. The villain will cause the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and more to unite in the highly anticipated third “Avengers” movie.
“Deadpool 2” (June 1) Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) meets Domino (Zazie Beetz) and Cable (Josh Brolin) in this comedic superhero sequel.

“Mission Impossible 6” (July 27) Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames and more return to the franchise for the latest adventure while Angela Bassett, Vanessa Kirby and Henry Cavill (and his mustache) will join.
“The Equalizer 2” (Aug. 3) Denzel Washington returns in this sequel to the 2014 movie.
“X-Men: Dark Phoenix” (Nov. 2) “Game of Thrones” actress Sophie Turner stars as Jean Grey in this X-Men film. After a mission takes the heroes into space, an accident causes Jean to start losing control and her sense of reason.
