KEY POINTS

  • Eric Gordon is at the center of several NBA trade discussions by the Rockets and multiple clubs
  • Gordon could be a good addition to NBA teams looking to make a good run in the playoffs
  • The Rockets continue to rebuild with younger players

The Houston Rockets are in a rebuilding phase, and it comes as no surprise that some veterans are on the block.

Eric Gordon is perhaps one of the last remaining veteran names on the Rockets' roster, and it appears the 2017 NBA Sixth Man of the Year award winner may be on the move soon.

According to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle, the Rockets have held discussions with multiple NBA teams concerning the 33-year-old NBA veteran.

Noting that Houston has been in talks with about a half-dozen teams, at the top of the list are teams looking to beef up to back their NBA playoff drive.

The Rockets hold the worst record in the Western Conference as of this writing with an 8-18 win-loss record.

They are focusing more on rebuilding the team around the likes of Jalen Green and Jabari Smith Jr.

Although he is a proven commodity, Gordon is seen as someone who is already past his prime.

Hence, his veteran expertise would be of more use to teams who are looking to make a big run come the postseason.

While that makes sense, the scribe added how getting an Eric Gordon trade done will not be easy.

For one, the 2017 NBA Three-Point Contest winner is on a non-guaranteed deal next season.

This means that the Rockets are not necessarily in dire need of creating cap space.

Furthermore, it appears Houston prefers to take in first-round picks for the succeeding NBA season.

In the next NBA Draft, Houston already has a couple of picks in the first round, meaning they may not necessarily be tempted to pull a trade involving upcoming first-round selections.

Gordon is getting his share of minutes this 2022-23 NBA season averaging 12.2 points, two rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 30.1 minutes of action in 22 games.

Although his current averages are far from his career numbers of 16.3 points, 2.8 assists, and 2.4 rebounds, these are valuable contributions that contending NBA teams could use if they can dangle the right mix of assets that would entice the Rockets to agree to a deal.
