  • Nadal is doing his part of helping people hit hard by COVID-19

Rafael Nadal knows that at some point, tennis games will resume. It may not be immediately the way it used to be but it is a start. With no end in sight for the COVID-19, critics are not that confident and believe it will take some time. The Spaniard opts to look at it in a different way, an optimistic manner.

Nadal gave his views via a virtual chat organized by the Spanish Federation of Tennis (RFET). He was asked on his take on the state of tennis with the COVID-19 pandemic paralyzing the sport. Like most sports, tennis tournaments need multiple people in attendance. Facing the prospect of playing with no one watching, the world no. 2 seems more interested in seeing a gradual resumption of tennis action and taking it from there, AFP reported.

"In tennis, you need to travel every week, stay in hotels, go to different countries," Nadal said. "Even if we play without an audience, to organize any event you need a lot of people involved, which cannot be ignored. At an international level, I see a serious problem."

There is no telling when tennis tournaments can return to normality. That could take time. But then again, everything needs to start at some point even if it means a limited number of people present. The devastation that the coronavirus has caused is pretty serious and Nadal is fully aware of this. Aside from people dealing with illnesses and some dying, job security is another issue that most people are facing.

"We have had a very tough month and a half, with many irreparable losses as well as others that are less important that will still bring great suffering to society, I hope only for a few months, at the economic level," he said. "Many people are going to lose their jobs."

Nadal is one of several tennis icons who have agreed to put up a fund to help lower-ranked players. As mentioned in a previous post, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have discussed how to go about it, aware that these are players without sponsors or pay for their expenses to compete in major tournaments.

But it appears tennis is not the only sport that he hopes to help out. In the same report, it was mentioned how he and former NBA player Pau Gasol are collaborating to raise funds to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
