While millennials are arguably responsible for popularizing social media-related trends, they cannot take credit for the invention of the selfie. According to Time magazine, the digitized selfie originated from self-portraits, which became popular through artists and photographers. The practice is "centuries-old."
A selection of famous self-portraits still holds relevance within popular culture today, including Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa painting, which is more than 500 years old. There is still mystery that surrounds the Mona Lisa. Some people claim it's "not a portrait of one woman, but an artful composite of many" or "an invention of Leonardo's extraordinary imagination," according to PBS.
In 1839, the first American "selfie" was birthed by Philadelphia-based photographer Robert Cornelius, according to Smithsonian magazine. Since it differs from a self-portrait, it's considered to be the first true selfie. The most famous was the one television host Ellen DeGeneres took at the Academy Awards in 2014. The picture included A-list actors like Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong'o, Jared Leto, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep and more.
Today, National Selfie Day became a trending topic on Twitter. In honor of the holiday, International Business Times created a diverse list of celebrities that post the best selfies to social media.
