Nothing beats a bite of the frozen nostalgia -- the one we lovingly call the vanilla custard, to spice up your brunch game and make your day a bit more special.

The iconic icy novelty can be eaten in several ways -- by topping them up with fruits, using them as a pie filling or simply having them on their own. The custard can be adapted to suit any taste and is a quick pick-me-up during snack times.

National Vanilla Custard Day is celebrated on Aug. 17 to commemorate this luxurious and creamy treat that originated in ancient Rome and became a sensation during the middle ages. However, the individual who came up with the idea of thickening the eggs and infusing them with vanilla flavor to whip up this decadent dessert still remains unknown.

The best way to celebrate vanilla custard day is to dish out the delicacy for your family. Below is a simple recipe that you must try. (Courtesy: Foodnessgracious.com)

Ingredients:

  • Eggs
  • Cornstarch
  • Sugar
  • Milk
  • Vanilla essence

Preparation:

Take a bowl and whisk in egg yolk, cornstarch and sugar. You know the mix has thickened well when the whisk leaves a ribbon trail. Pour warm milk into the bowl while making sure the milk is just at the right temperature not to scramble the eggs and blend with the cornstarch. Gradually mix the milk and keep stirring, take care not to cook the eggs and end up forming a lumpy mess. Add 1/4 cup of milk to the egg mixture while stirring continuously. Add vanilla essence. Place the custard on medium-low heat and stir consistently until it thickens. Wait until the mixture thickens to a point that it coats the back of your spatula. Remove from heat. Refrigerate for some time and serve.
