NBA Rumors: Former Warriors Guard Says Judge Dubs After 20 Games
The Golden State Warriors are off to an unusual start with a 1-2 record. After dropping their first two games via blowout, the Dubs finally scored their first win against the New Orleans Pelicans, 134-123. But of course, most know that the Pelicans are far from the best teams in the NBA this season. A win is a win but it remains that head coach Steve Kerr needs to make further adjustments.
In a previous report, Draymond Green seemed pretty down after two losses. He admitted that their situation sucked but is aware that this is what they have to go through. Following the exits of Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, DeMarcus Cousins, and Shaun Livingston, the Dubs needed to overhaul things after five successful NBA seasons.
Despite their sputtering start, a former Golden State Warrior cautions everyone not to entirely count the Dubs out. Baron Davis, who played for the Warriors from 2004-08, believes that it would be foolish to scratch them out this early.
"I wouldn't count them out ... it's too early," Davis told us at Petite Taqueria in West Hollywood via TMZ Sports.
However, he gave the Warriors a timeline. According to the 40-year-old all-star guard who was the third overall pick of the 1999 NBA Draft, it would be fair to see where they stand.
"Always judge a team after the first 20 games. After 20 games, you'll know where everybody stand and where they going."
It seems to be a fair assessment on the part of the two-time NBA All-Star. But looking at the personnel that Kerr needs to work with, it will be a tough season ahead. Green and Steph Curry are perhaps the only two players that he can bank on for now.
D’Angelo Russell is around but needs to mature rapidly to help out their cause. This includes extending his patience and avoiding a scene similar to that ejection he had during the Oklahoma City Thunder game. Kevon Looney and Willie Cauley-Stein are still out, a reason why Kerr explained he needed to deal with only nine players.
The immediate goal for the Warriors is to make the NBA playoffs. That is attainable but going deeper is another story. The Warriors host the dangerous Phoenix Suns next on Oct. 30 at the Chase Center starting at 10:30 p.m. EDT.
