  • The Golden State Warriors are expected to have a top pick in the upcoming NBA draft
  • Obi Toppin of the Dayton Flyers is considered as a top prospect
  • The Warriors are not yet committed on who they will select

The Golden State Warriors’ 2019-2020 season has been a unique ride for the team. A series of injuries and roster changes have brought the franchise in an interesting predicament as the favorites to win a top-five pick in the draft. Speculation has it that Dayton Flyers' big man Obi Toppin is one of the top prospects to take for the Bay Area team.

This year features a completely new look for the Warriors as their current roster has a different set of players from their championship days. The inexperience of their new players and the lack of the splash brothers have spiraled the team to the last place of the league.

Despite all of these challenges, they are still in position for a big comeback when the league settles down from the suspension. They acquired former All-Star D’Angelo Russell and eventually traded him the 2014 number 1 overall pick, Andrew Wiggins. With everything that has happened to the Warriors, they still remain as a team to watch as they’re looking to boost their lineup even more through the draft.

Considering that the NCAA tournament was canceled, it would be harder to analyze the top prospects given the current situation. Despite this, Toppin from the Dayton Flyers men’s basketball program is scouted to be an NBA ready athlete and is capable of contributing to any team.

But according to Alex Didion of NBC Bay Area, while Toppin is a top prospect that is versatile on the floor there are still a lot of areas to improve on.

“Toppin is a high flyer who can play the 3, 4, and 5, who also shot almost 42 percent from three in college, although he had a limited sample size. His defensive ability will be tested at the next level, as he didn’t demonstrate a strong ability to defend quicker forwards on the perimeter. His rebounding numbers also raise questions given his physical attributes,” Didion said by way of Golden State Of Mind.

Warriors owner Joe Lacob has said before that they’re still considering all possible options for the draft and might even trade down. There are no commitments yet on the front office’s end on their draft selection.

While plans are not certain for the Warriors’ front office, Toppin’s parents have already expressed that the Bay Area is his ideal destination. Only time can tell on if the six-foot-nine big man ends up donning a Warriors jersey.
