KEY POINTS

  • The New York Knicks could thrive with Victor Oladipo
  • Oladipo will become a free agent in 2021
  • The Knicks are in search of a star player to build around

The New York Knicks are now busy trying to figure out how to rebuild, something they have been doing for several years now. After wrapping up yet another disappointing year, the Knickerbockers are expected to skim the free-agent market this coming NBA season. There will be a lot of names available but the right one may not necessarily be there.

One player that they may try considering is Victor Oladipo of the Indiana Pacers. The 28-year-old guard did not exactly have a great season, appearing in only 13 games coming off a knee injury. The All-Star guard showed a bit of rust, far from the form that most are familiar with. Entering the final year of his contract, most expect the 6-foot-4 guard to go all out to raise his chances of getting a better deal in 2021.

The offers on the table for Oladipo will vary by next summer. The Knicks could be one of them, especially if they fail to land a much-needed superstar this offseason. it remains to be seen if New York would invest heavily in Oladipo, given his spare of injuries. Though he has shown promise, it remains that the second overall pick of the 2013 NBA Draft has yet to reach that level which would rank him among the greats, ESPN reported.

If the Knicks do consider him and make Oladipo a cornerstone, the increased responsibility placed on him could push him to take his game to the next level. And if that works, the Knicks may have just found the player to point them in the right direction.

Before thinking that far ahead, the Pacers still have the last say. In a previous post, it was mentioned how Oladipo was due for a contract extension. When he returned, it appeared he was on the right track. But the trajectory changed when the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Hence, a possible extension has been temporarily shelved for now.

The Pacers will be one of the 22 teams that will take part in the NBA's restart plans next month. However, some players are a bit hesitant to play due to COVID-19 fears. Oladipo is speculated to be playing when the league restarts. The Pacers are likely to keep tabs with his performance for the rest of the way. Another team that could do the same is the Knicks. This would be an opportunity for them to see if Oladipo fits in with their future.
