KEY POINTS

  • The LA Lakers are currently first place in the Western Conference and one of the favored teams to go deep into the playoffs
  • Kyle Kuzma has always been in trade talks for the LA Lakers
  • One new trade idea involves shipping Kyle Kuzma for Brooklyn Nets' Spencer Dinwiddie

While the NBA remains to be suspended, the offseason ideas from different teams remain abundant. The latest possible scenario speculating involves LA Lakers Kyle Kuzma and Brooklyn Nets’ Spencer Dinwiddie.

The Lakers are currently the best team in the Western Conference with a 49-14 record. Prior to the coronavirus suspension of the league, the Lakers were among the few teams to clinch a playoff berth. This would have been the first postseason series for the Lakers since the 2012-2013 season.

Despite their incredible run led by MVP candidate LeBron James and perennial All-Star Anthony Davis, there’s still much the Lakers could do to improve. Just this year, one of the biggest criticisms that the LA-based team received was how their roster was not deep enough. It lacked the third player that could propel the Lakers to an even more dominating team.

The third-leading scorer in the Lakers is Kuzma who is averaging 12.5 points per game. This highlights the huge gap between LeBron and Davis’ stats as they tally 25.7 and 26.7 points per game respectively.

The 24-year-old Kuzma has always provided quality minutes for the team and has shown flashes of brilliance on the floor. Despite this, he has always been included in multiple rumors especially during the peak of the trade deadline.

Given that Kuzma has proven to be a quality asset, it’s not far off to see his name on the trading block for a high-volume scorer.

Per Lake Show Life, a trade idea involving Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and a first-round pick could work out for the Lakers for rising star Spencer Dinwiddie. The addition of Dinwiddie not only gives the Lakers a new scorer but also adds support in the playmaking department.

While LeBron also leads the team in assists with 10.6 a game, his second-best playmaker is Rajon Rondo. The services of Rondo have been great with five assists an outing but he has had his bouts with injuries throughout the season. It would be an additional boost for the Lakers to have Dinwiddie on the squad who can create on his own but step up as a facilitator as well.

It’s been one of the biggest years of Dinwiddie this year with averages of 20.6 points and 6.8 assists per game. It would be interesting to see if the Lakers are able to ship the right assets to get the key players they need for the future.
