KEY POINTS

  • Anthony Davis is a free agent after this season
  • The LA Lakers have had one of their best seasons in years thanks to Davis
  • Davis will most likely re-sign with the Lakers

While the NBA’s future remains to be uncertain with the threat of the coronavirus looming, offseason speculation remains abundant. The Los Angeles Lakers are currently in the spotlight with their status on securing their top big man Anthony Davis. Despite the reports circulating of Davis exploring free agency, the Lakers remain as the favorites to re-sign the All-Star Center.

Prior to the suspension of the season, the Lakers have had one of their best stretches in years. LeBron James has emerged once again as an MVP candidate and has led his team to a playoff berth. The last time the Lakers were in the postseason was when they suffered a 4-0 sweep against the San Antonio Spurs in their 2012-2013 campaign.

It took years of rebuilding and gathering assets for the Lakers to bounce back in the position they are in now. In those rebuilding years, they acquired talented players in the draft such as Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram to be able to trade for Davis.

The deal has gone well for both squads with the Pelicans beaming with potential while the Lakers are once again dominating the team standings. Davis is leading the team with 26.7 points a game to go along with 9.4 rebounds an outing.

Per Kyle Goon of Orange County Register, the Lakers have done enough to keep Davis with the Purple and Gold.

“By any measure, this is the top priority of the summer given what the Lakers had to give up to get him. Most in league circles believe that work is largely done – that L.A. is where Davis wanted to be," said Goon through his article in Lakers Nation.

"LeBron James is the teammate he wanted to have, and that the Lakers have done enough to sell him on a future with the franchise," the writer adds. "Again last week, Pelinka mentioned Davis and James in a “partnership” with the front office, and since last July, Pelinka has reportedly sought Davis’ opinion in important decisions."

As the world continues to be in an uncertain state because of the global pandemic, Davis’ basketball future seems likely to be spent with the storied Laker franchise.
