NBA Rumors: Miami Could Acquire Anthony Davis
Answering the question on where Anthony Davis could possibly end up next NBA season continues with several ballclubs looming as favorites. The list includes the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers although there are others expected to join the mix. One of them could be the Miami Heat.
As mentioned in a previous post, the Heat are believed to be looking to overhaul their roster. Goran Dragic and Hassan Whiteside could opt in while there are also Dion Waiters and James Johnson who hold lucrative deals that team president Pat Riley may want to get rid of. In essence, expect the Heat to dangle these players even if pundits believe that this is something that may be hard to deal off. Assuming, however, that they are successful and rid them of the unproductive investment on the said players, one player who could be of interest would be Davis.
The Heat could relieve themselves of big money, approximately $75 million if they find a way to trade away these four players. As far as joining the Anthony Davis party, Miami could take its cue from the Paul George and Kawhi Leonard saga and inherit the 26-year-old's Bird rights, Heat Nation reported. This means that Miami could end up romancing Davis and offer him a maximum deal moving forward.
For the New Orleans Pelicans, Davis' demand is not that different from what George and Leonard when both sought their release from the Indiana Pacers and the San Antonio Spurs respectively. Seeing that they wanted out, both ended up getting traded and both seem content right now with their respective teams - Oklahoma City Thunder and the Toronto Raptors.
But for the Heat to pull it off, parting with Dragic, Whiteside, Waiters, and Johnson may not be enough. More casualties could enter the fray so that they can make room for the remaining money owed to Davis - pegged at $57 million, Spotrac reported. It all depends on who the Heat are able to unload moving forward.
But before all that, there is another Davis rant that needs to be factored in. The top pick of the 2012 NBA Draft apparently wants to join a winner, meaning Riley needs to assemble a formidable team next season. Davis could be the new face of the Heat but all that goes down the drain with no credible supporting cast backing him up.
