NBA: Steve Kerr Blasts Warriors Offense, Accepts Blame For Recent Losses
The Golden State Warriors made a strong start to the 2018-19 NBA season winning 10 of their opening 11 games with their only loss coming against current Western Conference leaders Denver Nuggets.
Steve Kerr’s team are the overwhelming favorites to win their third straight NBA championship this season having dominated the last two years, but they seemed to have hit some turbulence in recent weeks.
The Warriors have since lost eight of their 13 matches which have seen them drop to fourth place on the Western Conference table – behind the Nuggets, Los Angeles Clipper and Oklahoma City Thunder – just ahead of LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers.
The Warriors’ poor form coincided with Stephen Curry’s groin injury, which saw him miss 10 games, while Draymond Green has also been sidelined during the same period with a sprained toe. However, Curry’s return did not seem to help as the reigning champions went down to the Detroit Pistons 111-102 on Saturday night.
Coach Kerr has refused to lay the blame on the players and accepted most of the blame. He even went as far as saying that the loss to the Pistons was one his “worst” performances as a coach.
He was mainly critical of his offensive plays during recent games and is hoping to find a better solution to ensure his team fires on all cylinders rather than depend on the likes of Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Curry to handle all the shooting burden.
“I did not like our offense tonight,” Kerr said, as quoted by the Express. “I've gotta do a better job, honestly. Tonight was probably a game I could mark down as one of my worst performances as a coach, honestly.”
“All in all, I've got do a better job than I've done here the first couple of months of the season. We've gotta get better shots. We gotta get more spacing, get better flow. I’m just tired of seeing three people in the paint every time we are penetrating,” he explained. “The paint is so bunched up.”
“I know we are top-heavy with our shooting. We've got obviously some of the great shooters in our starting lineup, but we've got a lot of guys that are coming off the bench or been in the lineup who are not 3-point shooters or aren't shooting 3s. So I've got to do a better job of finding combinations that work and find spacing that works. Because right now, what we're [seeing] is not working,” Kerr added.
The Warriors are currently on a five-game road trip and having lost their first two to the Raptors and Pistons, they have three more games to go against the Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers and the Milwaukee Bucks before they return home.
