NBA Trade Rumors: Pistons Dealing Grant Could Take 'Godfather' Offer – Report
KEY POINTS
- Pistons trading away Jerami Grant is unlikely to happen
- The Celtics are reportedly interested but will need to offer something tempting to land Pistons forward
- The Celtics have multiple options when it comes to adding new players through free agency or buyouts
The Boston Celtics are speculated to be adding a big name soon as they try to prepare for the postseason wars. They do have a huge $28.7 million trade exception at their disposal, something that they could use on any of the discontented NBA players wanting out in their current teams.
But considering that there are big names like Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond who could be waived, Celtics team president Danny Ainge could get not just one or two players. Given those options, it is clear that Boston can go for a big star. Could that be Jerami Grant of the Detroit Pistons?
Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that Grant is one of two names on the Celtics' radar.
Since they acquired him, there is no question that Grant has been a key piece for the rebuilding Pistons. His numbers have soared, averaging 23.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 36.2 minutes of action. Particularly in scoring and playing time, these are huge jumps compared to his career averages.
With the big strides that the 26-year-old forward is making, it would not be surprising if other clubs like the Celtics would be linked to him. But at this point, it may take a lot to pluck Grant from Detroit. He is just in the first year of his three-year deal with the Pistons worth $60 million.
Even if the numbers would add up for Boston, a suggested trade that involved the Celtics and the Pistons just makes little sense at this point. The Cs could try, but it would take a colossal deal for it to go down.
The best the Pistons could do for now is listen to offers. From there, there is no telling if Detroit will bite. But considering Grant made it clear he wanted to play for Dwane Casey, a deal involving the Oregon native is unlikely to materialize.
For the Celtics, this is unlikely to be a big deal. They know that there are other players in the market whom they can go after and have the money to spend on. So the better question is: who will Ainge fancy aside from Grant?
It does not have to be a trade. The free-agent market should be interesting – especially once the March 25 NBA trade deadline comes.
