  • Zion Williamson and Ja Morant are among the top rookies of the NBA
  • The injury on Williamson caused a delay in his much-awaited NBA debut
  • Williamson shared his thoughts on potentially losing Rookie of the Year to Ja Morant

The race to the Rookie of the Year award would have been much closer if not for Zion Williamson’s injuries. The New Orleans Pelicans star revealed his thoughts on the possibility of losing the race to Memphis Grizzlies’ Ja Morant.

It has been a phenomenal year for both Morant and Williamson. The NBA has been blessed with the way these two young stars have shown flashes of dominance throughout their first year in the league. Morant has taken the Grizzlies back to a possible playoff run as Memphis was seeded eighth in the Western Conference prior to the league suspension.

The Pelicans, on the other hand, are still clawing outside the postseason picture but have made strides in improving their standing. In what was a rough start for New Orleans, the team was able to rise above for a 28-36 record. Considering that the earlier part of the year included a franchise-worst 13-game losing streak, the Pelicans have found their groove back to the game.

This improvement has something to do with Williamson’s debut. While New Orleans has improved collectively, Zion’s sensational presence gave the Pelicans a much-needed boost. Whether it’s the energy plays or the high-flying highlights, Zion has proven himself as a physical spectacle in the league.

With sports on hold and uncertainty regarding the season looms, Williamson shared his thoughts regarding the Rookie of the Year race. Per Pelicans beat writer Christian Clark, Williamson shared that he wanted to use a run for the playoffs as a boost for the award.

"My goal was if I could rally my team to the playoffs, hopefully, I could make a run for it,” Williamson said.

Despite fighting for the chance to win the award, Williamson is ready to accept whatever decision is made for the award.

“But it’s God’s plan at this point. If Ja wins it, I’m going to be happy for Ja," Williamson concluded.

There is no question that the young stars Morant and Williamson will have more stellar moments in the league for years to come. That will, unfortunately, have to wait as the world recovers from the global pandemic that has affected everyone.
