Nelson Mandela In Critical, Sometimes Unstable State; Former South African President Leaves Pretoria Hospital

Nelson Mandela might be ready to say goodbye. After three months receiving intensive care for a lung infection, Madiba, as the former president and founder of democratic South Africa is known, was discharged from a Pretoria hospital Sunday morning, and will continue to receive care at his house in Houghton, Johannesburg.

Mandela’s condition is critical and at times unstable, presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj told Johannesburg newspaper Mail & Guardian.

“His team of doctors is convinced that he will receive the same level of intensive care at his home,” he added, saying that the home had been reconfigured to ensure he receives the correct care. The same staff that was with him at the hospital will move to Mandela’s home.

There has been a wave of concern in South Africa and the world for Mandela, who led the peaceful shift from white minority rule to democracy 20 years ago. Mandela turned 95 on July 18.

President Jacob Zuma urged his countrymen to accept Madiba's condition, and to pray for his well-being.
