Is Netflix's 'You' Coming Back For Season 3? Renewal, Cancellation Details
“You” Season 2 has officially arrived on Netflix but fans are already asking about the possibility of Season 3. The show, since its premiere, has received plenty of praise from its Netflix audience. The premiere of Season 2 is even the top trending topics of the day on Twitter, at press time.
It was recently announced that some of California’s tax credit winners were revealed and one of those was Season 3 of “You.” According to Deadline, the show received $7.2 million in tax credit. While that’s a large sum of money, it isn’t enough to guarantee that there will be a Season 3. Netflix execs are expected to wait for about a month’s worth of viewing data at least to determine if they should renew the show for a 3rd season.
Although typically, these tax credits are given out to shows that executives feel “confident” about or shows that offer a great chance of renewal and viewership.
According to CNN, Lifetime ordered two seasons of “You” in advance, feeling quite confident themselves that the show would perform really well. Unfortunately, it didn’t -- at least, not at first. The show has since found its second home on Netflix, where fans patiently awaited the arrival of season 2.
The second season is a little more loosely based on the author Caroline Kepnes' second novel in the series. It follows the character from the first, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), this time in Los Angeles. He comes across a woman named Love (Victoria Pedretti) and their situation soon spirals in a familiar way. Though Joe tries to hold back, as he’s “been through this” and doesn’t want things to end up as badly as they did before.
If fans want a Season 3, this season would have to perform well, obviously -- but in terms of story, we might see it move in a slightly different direction. The author only has two books out right now and both seasons cover each book, so a season 3 might see Joe continue his season 2 story arc or do something entirely different. The author is currently working on the third book, so it's possible she could be finished by the time a season 3 is official.
One twist in this new season is the introduction of actor and comedian Chris D’Elia, who plays a creepy celebrity with competing derangement.
Fans will have to wait for Netflix to make an announcement to find out if there will be a “You” Season 3.
