D’Angelo Russell is keen to stay with the Brooklyn Nets but admits that his future will not be clear until the “big fish” in this year’s free agency class make their choices. The guard’s current employers are linked with moves for Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, who is said to be high on their list of summer targets.

The Nets can reach an agreement over an extension with Russell but if it does not happen before June 30, then it is likely to happen once the top free agents fall into place. Russell is also a free agent, and he admitted that he will be ready to make a decision on his future once the elite level players in this year’s free agent class fall into place.

“It’s more of just the waiting game as far as chess moves have to be made,” Russell told The New York Post via phone while on vacation in Spain. “There’s a lot of big fish out there that have to find their destinations so I think I’ll [fall in line after that].

“There are a lot of fish out there that need to find destinations. So whenever that time comes then I have decisions to make on my own, I think I’ll be well ready for it,” the Nets guard added.

Durant and Kawhi Leonard are likely to be the most sorted players this summer but if Irving decides to leave Boston Celtics, he is likely to be among the most sought after. The New York Knicks have him on their wish list along with Durant but the Brooklyn franchise is keen to sign him, especially since he grew up a Nets fan.

The Nets have the option of letting Russell go and creating cap space for two elite free agents, but the report claims that they are also willing to sign Irving and pair him with Russell next season. The Nets star is open to adding more quality to the team, but praised the current roster after making the playoffs.

“If we’re being completely honest, I enjoyed the team that we had this whole season,” Russell said talking about pairing up with Irving next season. “If the situation was to come up to have pieces of his caliber around, it’ll make us a better team obviously. But I’m not going to say I didn’t enjoy our team, and the pieces we had around.”
