NBA Finals: Klay, Looney Hopeful For Game 3, Iguodala Sinks Raptors
The Golden State Warriors leveled the 2019 NBA finals with a 109-104 win in Game 2 in Toronto despite the Raptors leading by as many as 12 points in the first half. The Splash Brothers - Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson - combined for 48 points to lead the way, but there were key contributions from DeMarcus Cousins, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala.
The Warriors may have taken the advantage going into Game 3 at the Oracle Arena, but head coach Steve Kerr has a plethora of injury concerns facing him. Thompson was the latest casualty after the shooting guard pulled a hamstring with just over 6 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
The reigning champions had already lost Kevon Looney earlier in the game with reports claiming the center had shoulder and collar bone issues. Kerr will be hoping the complaints are minor as they are already without Kevin Durant, who is yet to recover from the calf strain he suffered against Houston Rockets in the Western Conference semifinals.
"Klay said he'll be fine. But Klay could be half dead and he'd say he's fine. We'll see. He pulled his hamstring. Said it's minor,” Kerr told reporters talking about Thompson after the game, via The Athletic’s Anthony Slater.
Thompson remains confident about returning for Game 3 at the Oracle Arena on Wednesday, telling Yahoo Sports: “No, I don’t see myself missing Game 3,” which will come as a major boost for head coach Kerr.
Looney is also expected to return for Game 3 but revealed to The Athletic that the medical staff will run further tests on his shoulder, collar bone and high chest area. Slater said: “Kevon Looney tells me it’s the shoulder, collar bone, high chest area, needs to get more tests. It hurts, but he thinks he’ll be able to play through it. Happened on that Kawhi truck stick drive.”
Meanwhile, Curry, who had 23 points in the game, played 41 minutes but seemed like he was struggling to stay in the game with many speculating if he was unwell. Kerr revealed that his point guard was feeling a little “dehydrated and light headed” but was unsure about the exact reason for Curry’s Game 2 struggles.
However, it was Iguodala who hammered the final nail in the Raptors coffin by making a clutch three-pointer with just under ten seconds remaining in the game. The home team had reduced what was an eight-point deficit with just over two minutes remaining to two points with around 30 seconds on the clock.
The Raptors focused all their defense on Curry ensuring he had no room to make a play or get a shot away, but in the process left Iguodala open on the left side of the court. Once the ball reached him with five on the shot clock, he took his time and buried the bucket to seal the win, and Curry believes it was disrespectful to leave him open like that.
