New Jersey Murder: Woman Kills Wife With Wine Chiller, Suspect At Large
The New Jersey Police were on the lookout for a woman who murdered her wife by hitting her with a wine chiller.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and Brick Township Police, in a joint statement, announced that 48-year-old Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus was charged with the murder of her 32-year-old wife, Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus, on Sunday (May 17).
The police on Sunday responded to a home on Creek Road in Brick Township, about 50 miles east of Trenton, after receiving reports of an unresponsive female. The responding officers found Rebecca lying dead in the upstairs bedroom.
An autopsy was conducted on Monday and the medical examiner ruled Rebecca’s death as a homicide.
According to the statement, an investigation revealed that Mayra hit Rebecca with a "cylindrical container used for the purpose of chilling wine." The injuries Rebecca sustained "were consistent with the implementation of this item."
According to the statement, Mayra and Rebecca lived together in the apartment. The Ocean County Prosecutors said that "it is our understanding" that they were married.
Mayra had put up a Facebook post on Mother's Day, praising her partner, saying "Mi Amor gracias for all the uncountable ways you make this little crazy family … and my entire life better with every moment."
"I love you," she also wrote in Spanish. "Today, tomorrow and always."
Authorities could not find Mayra in the house. They suspect she fled the scene after committing the crime.
The motive behind the slaying was unknown. The police did not reveal information as to how they concluded that Mayra was the suspect in the killing.
In addition to the murder charges, Mayra was also charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. A warrant was issued on her name.
“Great teamwork by all of the respective law enforcement agencies and officers involved in this investigation. Our focus now is to find Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus and bring her into custody,” Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said in the statement.
