A New Netflix Show Is Resulting In Users Canceling Their Subscriptions
Netflix announced “the goop lab with Gwyneth Paltrow,” their new collaboration with the actress, earlier this week and user reactions have been noticeably negative. While many are protesting the supposedly “dangerous” pseudoscience of the show, others are taking it a step further and protesting against the streaming service altogether.
Twitter users have been responded to Netflix directly on the platform, explaining their desire to leave the streaming app for good following the announcement of Paltrow's series. One user specifically cited “Protesting The GOOP Lab” as their official reason for canceling their subscription to Netflix.
The idea of the show, which is designed to seek health through various spiritual and alternative means, isn’t sitting well with some people who have expressed their concern over its health advice being “dangerous.”
And while most Twitter users who have spoken up about Paltrow’s “the goop lab” agree that it’s controversial, some just aren’t willing to cancel their Netflix subscriptions just yet.
One user replied with a NSFW statement that Netflix likely doesn’t care if they lose subscribers due to them having “millions of users” and “one person leaving because of some washed up actors beauty products isnt going to do anything [sic].”
Another user commented that they already canceled their Netflix subscription but were going to come back thanks to “The Witcher.” However, after seeing the “Goop” trailer and following the controversy, they decided to hold off on returning to the service.
According to a New York Times interview with Paltrow, the actress and lifestyle brand owner just might be living off the controversy, if it means people actually stay on the service and watch the show. She claimed in the 2018 interview she wanted to “monetize” the attention Goop was getting from the “firestorm” the controversies had caused. This was around the time of the infamous Goop Jade Egg that was deemed dangerous, forcing Goop to pay $145,000 in damages.
The backlash doesn't appear to be slowing Paltrow or Goop down as Netflix is moving forward with the show. “the goop lab with Gwyneth Paltrow” premieres on the service on Jan. 24.
