Newborn Baby Dies After Being Thrown Off Bridge, Body Found Inside Plastic Bag
A newborn baby in India died after being thrown from a bridge Thursday.
The bleeding body of the baby was discovered by a boy in the eastern state of West Bengal.
The local police were then alerted about the incident. Authorities said the baby was wrapped in a cloth and was put inside a plastic bag before being thrown from the bridge.
The child reportedly died immediately. The body of the baby was sent to the Malda Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy examination, NDTV reported, citing Press Trust of India.
A woman had reportedly thrown the sack into the Mahananda river. However, since there was no water in the river at the time, it hadn't fallen on dry land.
The unidentified boy, who reportedly witnessed the incident, told the local media he went close to the bag and then decided to open it. When he saw the dead body of the baby, he alerted other local residents.
Following the incidents, locals nearby protested and demanded the police take strict action against the accused. Authorities are currently trying to search for the baby's mother and the people responsible for the crime.
In a similar incident, the body of a newborn baby was found wrapped in a plastic bag outside a home in September in South Africa. The decomposing corpse was found in the Ga-Mashabela village in Masemola. Limpopo Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Thembi Hadebe ordered an immediate probe. According to Hadebe, a family in the village found the plastic bag with the newborn baby inside it when they opened their main door in the morning. Authorities said the newborn was a girl child.
Preliminary investigation revealed the newborn was strangled to death before her body was put inside the bag. The authorities believe the child was just a day old. Hadebe described the death of the newborn as horrendous and disturbing. "Those responsible for this barbaric act should be brought to book. We call on the community to come forward with any information about the mother of the child or about the murder to speed up the investigation," Hadebe said.
