Newborn Baby Gets Stuck In Toilet Bowl As Mother Gives Birth In Hospital Bathroom, Dies
A newborn baby in India died after slipping into a toilet bowl as the mother was giving birth in a bathroom.
The freak incident took place in Kanpur, a city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The mother was forced to give birth to the child in the bathroom after doctors at a hospital allegedly refused to admit the pregnant woman, local media Mathrubhumi reported Thursday.
The mother, identified as 30-year-old Haseen Bano, was taken to the emergency ward of Lala Lajpat Rai hospital after she went into labor. Her husband, identified by his first name Moin, requested the doctors to attend to his wife. When the woman’s pain increased, she rushed to the toilet and gave birth to the child while sitting on the seat.
The infant immediately slipped out and the head got stuck in the hole of the toilet bowl.
The hospital staff immediately rushed to the bathroom and broke the toilet to pull out the baby. However, the baby had died by the time staff managed to take the infant out.
Dr. Sanjay Kala, principal Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi memorial medical college, with which the Lala Lajpat Rai hospital is associated, ordered a probe into the incident, The Times of India reported.
“The issue is serious. A committee has been constituted to investigate the entire matter. Strict action will definitely be taken against the guilty,” Dr. Kala reportedly said.
The gender of the baby was not immediately known.
Last month, in the southern state of Kerala, a 17-year-old girl allegedly tried to flush her newborn baby down a toilet. The body of the child was found in the toilet of a private hospital. The teenager had gone to the hospital with her mother due to severe stomach pain. She then went to the bathroom and gave birth to the child there. The teenager's mother told the police she was unaware of her daughter's pregnancy. "Since she is only 17, the case is registered under POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act). We hope to record her statement in a few days and a probe will be launched based on that,” an official said at the time.
