  • Cam Newton debuts with a bang for New England
  • Newton got irked when the Dolphins player tried to grab his gold chain
  • Belichick all praise for Newton's debut game with the Patriots

Cam Newton proved he was a wise acquisition by New England, leading the Patriots to a 21-11 win against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. However, the 31-year-old was spotted in a scuffle after the game with most left guessing on the reason why.

It turns out that when the game was over, Newton took exception when one of the Dolphins players tried to reach for his chain. He admitted in the post-game conference that this got under his skin.

"They was reaching for my chain, though," Newton said. "They were reaching for my chain. And I think that kind of got up under my skin."

A video of the scuffle seen below appears to show Dolphins defensive linemen Christian Wilkins and Raekwon Davis trying to grab Newton's chain. The former NFL MVP tried to downplay the incident but admitted the whole thing let his anger get the best of him, NBC Sports reported.

"I don't want nothing to be taken from a great team game that we did have, and I don't want to be selfish to kind of dwell on that,” Newton said. "I think for us as a team or me personally, a lot of tempers can flare, and I was just teasing with coach, that College Park almost came out of me. But through it all, man, it was all just fun and games."

The whole incident somehow stains the fine debut of the 31-year-old player who filled in the void left by Tom Brady who is now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Newton's 75 rushing yards on 15 carries were the most by a Patriots quarterback since 1977. Steve Grogan had 81 rushing yards at the Buffalo Bills, according to the Elias Sports Bureau via ESPN.

Newton’s 15 rush attempts were the most ever by a Patriots quarterback in a game. The Patriots also rushed 42 times for 217 yards overall. Both totals were their most in a season opener under coach Bill Belichick.

"Cam's been great for us. He's earned everybody's respect, really, daily," Belichick said. "I thought he played well today. He ran the ball well, he led the team, made some good checks and adjustments."
