NFL Rumors: Cowboys Next Head Coach May Not Be From College Ranks
KEY POINTS
- Urban Meyer is being linked to the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins
- At least five NFL teams are interested in getting the former Ohio State coach
- Meyer may have better control of the Redskins than the Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are more likely to hire a new head coach after the current NFL season. Unfortunately, there is no clarity yet on who will succeed Jason Garrett. A name that has cropped up is Urban Meyer, a 55-year-old retired college coach who is eyed by multiple NBA teams.
As mentioned in a previous report, the fate of Garrett could be decided after this coming weekend. Team owner Jerry Jones has opted not to engage in such talks although it is apparent that a coaching change is running in his mind. In all, he is unhappy and critics believe that something will go down soon.
The Cowboys are reportedly among five teams interested in the former Ohio State coach. The others are the Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, and the Washington Redskins. Other than Dallas, the Redskins are said to be aggressively working on getting the multi-titled college coach, according to Bleacher Report NFL insider Mike Freeman. A glaring reason for this is reportedly the control that Meyer would have.
For the Cowboys, seeing Meyer get full control seems fuzzy. Jones has been known to have full control of the Cowboys. This means that he is not looking for someone to co-parent the team. Also, it appears that the 77-year-old does not think highly of college coaches. Jones knows that the chances of success are pretty low -- probably hinting he wants someone who can put the Cowboys back on track.
Then again, Meyer's interest could change the take of Jones. He seems fascinated by the team since he gets the chance to whip up a team composed of two promising young NFL stars.
“That’s the one. Great city. They got Dak Prescott, Zeke Elliott. You got a loaded team. The one job in pro football that you say, ‘I got to go do that,’” Meyer said in October to The Athletic.
But what if the Redskins gave Meyer full authority to reshape Washington next NFL season? This could mean a lot, meaning team owner Daniel Snyder and general manager Bruce Allen would throw their full support. Snyder has been notorious for his meddling in the past. But if his decision is to allow Meyer to have the final say on coaching and personnel, it could be too good of an offer to pass up.
