As the Dallas Cowboys negotiate a new contract with Dak Prescott, the quarterback is likely looking to become the NFL’s highest-paid player. Another Cowboys’ player is expected to hit free agency and earn more than any other player at his respective position.

Cornerback Byron Jones is set to become one of the league’s most sought-after free agents. He will probably get offers that far exceed Dallas’ price range.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson, NFL teams expect Jones to make at least $16 million per season. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that Jones could land a contract that pays him up to $18 million per season.

Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard leads all defensive backs with $15 million per season. Trumaine Johnson’s average yearly salary of $14.5 million would put him second among all cornerbacks, but he’s expected to be released by the New York Jets.

Dallas is reportedly discussing a long-term deal with Prescott that would pay him at least $33 million a year. Wide receiver Amari Cooper could stay with the Cowboys on a contract that pays him as much or more than Jones. That likely means Dallas will have a new top cornerback in the 2020 season.

The Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders are considered to be potential suitors for Jones.

Jones only has two career interceptions, but he’s viewed by many as one of the best cornerbacks in the league. He was a second-team All-Pro selection for the 2018 season. The 27-year-old has only missed one game since the Cowboys made him the No.27 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Jones had 46 tackles and six passes defensed in 15 games during the 2019 season. He led a defense that ranked 10th against the pass and 20th in opponents’ passer rating.

The Cowboys missed the playoffs last season with an 8-8 record.
