Many fans and NFL players might have been surprised when the news broke Tuesday night that the New York Giants agreed to send Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a first-round draft pick, a third rounder and safety Jabrill Peppers. The wide receiver, himself, probably was not shocked.

In fact, it sounds like Beckham had been expecting to be traded in the 2019 NFL offseason. Both Chris Carter and Nick Wright said Wednesday morning on FS1’s “First Things First” that Beckham told them as much earlier this year.

“They gonna trade me, dog,” Carter responded when asked what Beckham told him at Super Bowl LIII. “They don’t believe in me.”

Beckham told Wright that he didn’t know if the Giants would keep him, and Wright felt Beckham wasn’t against the idea of being traded.

The Giants reportedly fielded offers for Beckham last offseason, but they held onto him after no team met their asking price of two first-round picks. New York signed the receiver to a record-setting $90 million contract shortly before the start of the 2018 season.

After New York lost three of their first four games, Beckham created headlines by telling ESPN he didn’t know if there was an issue at quarterback. He also couldn’t say for sure if he was happy in New York.

The Giants finished in last place in the NFC East for the second straight year. It also marked the second straight year that Beckham’s season was cut short by an injury.

Beckham caught 77 passes for 1,052 yards in 12 games. He missed the Pro Bowl in both 2017 and 2018 after making it in each of his first three seasons.

There were rumors throughout the offseason that the Giants might trade Beckham, even though general manager Dave Gettleman said New York had no plans to do so.
