NFL Rumors: Panthers Team Game Proving Better Without Cam Newton
The Carolina Panthers have found a way to purr even with Cam Newton in the sidelines. Kyle Allen has been singled out but the truth is that head coach Ron Rivera is making it all work. Regardless, a big question needs to be answered heading into Week 8. Will there be a change at the quarterback position?
Such is the question being tossed around as of this writing. There is still no definite word if Newton is ready to return. He continues to sit out for Carolina as he recovers from a Lisfranic injury in his left foot. But the Panthers have managed to string up four wins in a row with Allen in the lead, the Charlotte Observer reported.
Until an official health update is given, it appears Allen will retain his spot as the Panthers' starting quarterback. The 23-year-old is a revelation and upped his total to four straight wins after a 0-2 start by Carolina. Their last win came at the expense of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 37-26. So far, the second-year pro has completed nearly two-thirds of his passes for 901 yards and seven touchdowns, along with no interceptions, NFL.com reported. However, Carolina's success goes beyond Allen.
There are other Panthers players stepping up for Rivera. That includes Christian McCaffrey who got MVP chants against the Eagles. Aside from that, the Panthers are reaping success from the defensive end. In general, it has become a team effort. It is paying off for the Panthers who are now 4-2.
The Panthers will get a bye for Week 7. They will face the San Francisco 49ers at the Levis Stadium next in Week 8 starting at 4:05 p.m. ET. With a long lull, Rivera prefers to stay mum on the team's future plans.
“As far as I’m concerned, we’re just not going to deal with the question until it’s time,” said the Panthers coach following their win over the Bucs.
The bye will give Newton more time to recover and also aid the Panthers to decide on the quarterback row. Their unbeaten run is likely to be a factor although Carolina needs to consider their next opponents.
After the 49ers, they face some of the NFL's best teams with promising quarterbacks. That list includes Kyler Murray, Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson, and Matt Ryan. With no credible update on Newton's health, Allen will likely retain his position. That is unless he either gets injured or wilts moving forward.
