  • Carson Wentz continues to play behind Jalen Hurts, raising questions on his future
  • Wentz remains a vital part of the Eagles
  • The Patriots could explore a deal for Wentz

Carson Wentz finds himself playing behind rookie pick Jalen Hurts, and most are now speculating about his NFL future. Some teams could take a chance on the 27-year-old, with the New England Patriots singled out as a potential destination.

Wentz was benched by the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 13 against the Green Bay Packers and made a good account of himself. Providing the spark that the Eagles need, head coach Doug Pederson stuck to the 22-year-old native of Texas in their Week 14 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. Philly won 24-21.

With those plans, serious questions about what the future holds for the one-time Super Bowl champion are in the air. But this early, Philly is claiming that Wentz will remain a major part of the team and that they still believe in the Pro Bowl Champion, ESPN reported.

It has not been a good run for Wentz, who has had his share of struggles this NFL season. He completed a career-low of 57.4% of his passes aside from having a career-high 16 interceptions. He is also 3.8.1 as an Eagles starter.

Though it could only be a stroke of bad luck for the second pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, there are money matters to consider. Wentz signed a four-year extension with the Eagles last year that includes $107 million in guarantees. Should they end up releasing him, the 27-year-old would still get a $10 million roster bonus and $15.4 million in base salary for 2021.

Assuming that Philadelphia opts to trade him away, they would get cap savings to increase worth $25.4 million if it were to be done by June 1. Interested teams would have to send a massive return to inherit his huge contract. Looking at it differently, it could be an investment for that mystery NFL team’s future.

The New England Patriots could be that team. This is assuming they cut ties with Cam Newton. Despite his talent, the Pats have not exactly had a smooth season, although they are now third in the AFC East.

Since the departure of Tom Brady, New England unsurprisingly has not been the same. Even if Newton brings a lot to the table, there is no telling if his efforts are enough to get a new deal next NFL season. The 31-year-old quarterback agreed to a one-year, incentive-laden deal worth $7.5 million.

It is a move that could happen, although Philly seems firm on keeping Wentz. However, anything can happen and the Pats may pass judgment after assessing their performance this NFL season.
