NFL Rumors: Texans Headed To ‘Stormy’ Offseason, Disgruntled Star Still Holding Out
KEY POINTS
- New Texans general manager Nick Caserio has no plans to let Deshaun Watson go
- Watson's complaints are not directed at Caserio but at the upper management
- The new GM could calm things down once he talks to the Pro Bowler
The Houston Texans are in for a tough offseason, with new general manager Nick Caserio having his work cut out for him. At the top of his list is to touch base with star quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is said to be "extremely unhappy" with team management, a report says.
Watson wanted to be more involved with the Texans, particularly in the selection of a new general manager, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported. The Pro Bowler did not get the opportunity to participate in the selection of Caserio despite team owner Cal McNair informing him that he would be more involved.
It should be noted that Watson has no qualms about the appointment of Caserio. But the 25-year-old is reportedly upset because his and the team’s inputs were not heard. He was not even allowed to sit down and talk to the candidates for the general manager position.
Since the appointment of Caserio, the three-time Pro Bowler has not spoken to anyone on the Texans' side. But Watson did react to the new GM signing on Twitter, tweeting, “Some things never change…”
Regardless, Caserio has shown no indication that he intends to change things up in Houston. The first order of business on his end is to sit down and talk to the disgruntled quarterback.
"I think the most important thing for us to speak specifically to Deshaun. I say from afar the respect and admiration that I have for him as a player and what he's done for this organization is significant. He's our quarterback,” Caserio stated via NFL.com.
McNair added that Watson and J. J. Watt remain valuable members of the Texans and the city. He said he sees good things ahead for the team and that Caserio is the right man for the job.
"In regards to 4 (Watson) and 99 (J.J. Watt), they're valued members on our team. They're important to the team and the city," McNair said. "They're passionate and they want to win. And those are totally in alignment with where we're going and what we've done here with bringing Nick aboard, so it's perfect."
The Texans are trying to find ways to turn things around. The frustration is apparent, and part of that was a clip in their season-ending loss to the Tennessee Titans. Watt had apologized to Watson, saying they should have had 11 wins.
Houston won only four games last NFL season and will now try to resolve that in the offseason. So far, they are off to a stormy start.
