Obama Cabinet 2013: Anthony Foxx To Get Transport Secretary Nod; Trade, Commerce Posts Next Up

President Barack Obama is close to filling out his second-term cabinet, gearing up to announce Charlotte, N.C., Mayor Anthony Foxx as his next transportation secretary on Monday, with other announcements for commerce and trade secretaries to come later.

The White House confirmed with the media over the weekend that Foxx will replace outgoing Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who will not continue in the president's second term. Earlier this year, LaHood said he was retiring but promised he will not be stepping down until his replacement was found.

If the Senate confirms Foxx, he will be one of two African-Americans serving in Obama's 2013 cabinet. (The other is Attorney General Eric Holder.) Obama has long faced criticisms about the lack of diversity in his cabinet. Foxx will also assume the position from an elected political office just like his predecessor, LaHood, who was a member of Congress from Illinois until January 2009.

Foxx has been mayor of Charlotte since 2009. He was a lawyer before running for public office.

Obama also needs to fill the commerce and trade posts.

According to multiple media reports, Obama will likely nominate Penny Pritzker, a Chicago, Ill., businesswoman and fundraiser for the president's campaigns, to be his next commerce secretary.

The Chicago Tribune reported last week that Pritzker, who gave $250,000 to the Presidential Inaugural Committee, was being vetted for the position. According to Forbes, Pritzker was the 263rd richest person in the U.S. in 2011, with an estimated net worth of $1.7 billion.

Michael Froman, who is Obama’s deputy national security adviser for international economic affairs, is being rumored as the nominee for U.S. trade representative.
