A man in Parma, Ohio, was sentenced to life imprisonment Monday for killing his toddler son.

On May 12, 2018, the accuses, identified as 42-year-old Jason Shorter, walked into the police station with self-inflicted stab wound to his chest and self-inflicted cuts on his wrists. He then informed the officers that he wanted to surrender for attempted murder and suicide. The officers rushed to the man’s car parked in the visitor’s parking lot and found his one-year-old son lying motionless in the trunk of the vehicle. The boy, Nicholas Lawrence Shorter, was rushed to a nearby hospital with stab wounds to his chest. He was declared brought dead by the doctors.

The accused pleaded guilty to aggravated murder in January and was ordered to not have contact with the victim’s family.

Before the sentencing Monday, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley, said, “This individual viciously took the life of his son, apparently to spite the child’s mother.”

Addressing the court, Nicholas’ mother said, “He selfishly took away Nicholas’ right to live, to love, to experience his first kiss.”

“You made it clear that you should have never had any access to that sweet little boy, you never had his best interest at heart. It was more about control and winning for you,” she added.

The accused was sentenced Monday and could get parole only after 41 years.
