Olivia Rodrigo stylishly tackled “teen angst” in her music video for “Brutal,” which was released Monday.
“Brutal” is the first song from her album “Sour” which returned to No. 1 on the Rolling Stone Top 200 Albums chart with 26,000 album sales during the week of Aug. 13 through Aug. 19.
The music video begins with the word “Brutal” written on the screen with a backdrop similar to a vintage video game. It unfolds to a “choose your player” option showing the singer dressed in various outfits representing players in the video game.
“I’m so insecure I think, that I’ll die before I drink. And I'm so caught up in the news of who likes me and who hates you; And I'm so tired that I might quit my job, start a new life; And they'd all be so disappointed 'Cause who am I, if not exploited?,” Rodrigo could be heard singing.
“And I'm so sick of 17 where's my fucking teenage dream? If someone tells me one more time 'Enjoy your youth, ' I'm gonna cry and I don't stick up for myself ,” she continues as her character sits inside what seems to be a classroom full of bored teenagers.
Petra Collins directed the video which featured stylish outfits, retro video games and shopping malls.
Rodrigo posted a snippet of the music video on her Instagram account on Monday as she thanked Collins for inspiring her to achieve her best in music.
"brutal music video is out now! had the best time ever making this. so so so grateful for @petrafcollins who constantly inspires me and who directed this video so incredibly. Hope u guys love the vid and all my teen angst lol,” she captioned her post.
